    aDetermine (i) $P\left(\frac{B}{A}\right)$ (ii) $P\left(\frac{A}{B^C}\right)$ if A and B are events with $P(A)=\frac{1}{3}, P(B)=\frac{1}{4}, P(A \cup B)=\frac{1}{2}$
    How to answer
    • Calculate $P(A \cap B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cup B) = 1/3 + 1/4 - 1/2 = 1/12$
    • Calculate $P(B/A) = \frac{P(A \cap B)}{P(A)} = \frac{1/12}{1/3} = 1/4$
    • Calculate $P(A \cap B^C) = P(A) - P(A \cap B) = 1/3 - 1/12 = 3/12 = 1/4$
    • Calculate $P(B^C) = 1 - P(B) = 1 - 1/4 = 3/4$
    • Calculate $P(A/B^C) = \frac{P(A \cap B^C)}{P(B^C)} = \frac{1/4}{3/4} = 1/3$

aTwo factories produce identical clocks. The production of the first factory consists of 10,000 clocks of which 100 are defective. The second factory produces 20,000 clocks of which 300 are defective. What is the probability that a particular defective clock was produced in the first factory.
    How to answer
    • Define events: $F_1$ = produced by factory 1, $F_2$ = produced by factory 2, $D$ = defective clock.
    • Compute prior probabilities: $P(F_1) = 10000/30000 = 1/3$, $P(F_2) = 20000/30000 = 2/3$.
    • Compute likelihoods: $P(D|F_1) = 100/10000 = 0.01$, $P(D|F_2) = 300/20000 = 0.015$.
    • Apply Bayes' Theorem: $P(F_1|D) = \frac{P(F_1)P(D|F_1)}{P(F_1)P(D|F_1) + P(F_2)P(D|F_2)} = \frac{100}{100 + 300} = \frac{100}{400} = 0.25$ or $1/4$.

aThe average marks scored by 32 boys in 72 with a standard deviation of 8. While that for 36 girls in 70 with a standard deviation of 6. does this indicate that the boys perform better than girls at level of significance 0.05? Explain.
    How to answer
    • State null hypothesis $H_0: \mu_1 = \mu_2$ and alternative hypothesis $H_1: \mu_1 > \mu_2$ (right-tailed test).
    • Calculate test statistic: $Z = \frac{72 - 70}{\sqrt{\frac{8^2}{32} + \frac{6^2}{36}}} = \frac{2}{\sqrt{\frac{64}{32} + \frac{36}{36}}} = \frac{2}{\sqrt{2 + 1}} = \frac{2}{\sqrt{3}} \approx 1.155$.
    • Find critical value at $\alpha = 0.05$ for one-tailed test: $Z_{0.05} = 1.645$.
    • Compare $|Z| = 1.155 < 1.645$: fail to reject $H_0$.
    • Conclusion: The data does not provide sufficient evidence at 0.05 significance level to conclude that boys perform better than girls.

bExperience had show that 20% of a manufactured product is of the top quality. In one day's production of 400 articles only 50 are of top quality. Test the hypothesis at 0.05 level.
    How to answer
    • State null hypothesis $H_0: P = 0.20$ and alternative hypothesis $H_1: P \ne 0.20$ (two-tailed test).
    • Calculate sample proportion: $p = 50 / 400 = 0.125$.
    • Calculate standard error: $SE = \sqrt{\frac{P(1-P)}{n}} = \sqrt{\frac{0.20 \times 0.80}{400}} = \sqrt{\frac{0.16}{400}} = \frac{0.4}{20} = 0.02$.
    • Compute test statistic: $Z = \frac{0.125 - 0.20}{0.02} = \frac{-0.075}{0.02} = -3.75$.
    • Critical value for two-tailed test at $\alpha = 0.05$ is $Z_{\text{crit}} = \pm 1.96$.
    • Since $|Z| = 3.75 > 1.96$, reject $H_0$ at the 0.05 level of significance.
