A. CORE ANNOTATION & DIMENSIONING SYSTEMS

Dimensioning Fundamentals & Styles

  • Dimension Types:

    • Linear: Horizontal/vertical distance.

    • Aligned: Distance parallel to object.

    • Angular: Angle between objects.

    • Radial: Radius of arcs/circles.

    • Diameter: Diameter of circles/arcs.

    • Ordinate: X or Y coordinate from a base.

    • Leader (LEADER): Arrow with text note.

  • Dimension Styles (DIMSTYLE): Master control for all dimension appearance.

    • Key Tabs:

      • Lines: Dimension/suppression lines.

      • Symbols & Arrows: Arrowhead type/size, center marks.

      • Text: Style, height, color, placement.

      • Fit: Text/arrow placement strategy.

      • Primary Units: Unit format, precision, zero suppression.

      • Alternate Units: Secondary unit display (e.g., mm/in).

      • Tolerance: ± limits, precision, format.

    • Management: DIMSTYLE command to create/set current. DIMSTYLE command with Save/Restore for standards.

  • Key Dimension Variables (Examples):

    • DIMSCALE: Overall scale.

    • DIMTXT: Text height.

    • DIMEXE: Extension line offset.

    • DIMASZ: Arrowhead size.

[!TIP] Exam Focus: Know which DIMSTYLE tab controls arrow size (Symbols & Arrows) vs. text offset (Fit). Be prepared to set up a dimension style for both metric (mm) and imperial (in) units with alternate units.

Text & Multiline Text (MTEXT)

  • TEXT (Single-line):

    • Each TEXT command creates a separate object.

    • Use for labels, simple notes.

    • Justification: Left, center, right, etc.

  • MTEXT (Multiline Text):

    • Single object containing multiple lines/paragraphs.

    • Use Cases: Paragraphs, tables, formatted notes.

    • MTEXT Editor Features:

      • Formatting: Font, size, color, bold/italic/underline.

      • Fields: Insert dynamic fields like Date, Scale, Drawing Name.

      • Columns: Create newspaper-style columns.

      • Symbols: Insert degree (°), plus/minus (±), etc.

      • Spell Check: Built-in dictionary.

    • Key Properties: Justify, Height, Width Factor (stretch), Obliquing Angle (slant).

[!TIP] Common Pitfall: Forgetting to set the correct text style (STYLE) before creating TEXT/MTEXT. MTEXT is required for fields and columns.

Leaders & Multileaders (MLEADER)

  • LEADER: Simple polyline with arrowhead and annotation.

  • MLEADER (Multileader): Advanced, style-based leader system.

    • Components: Arrowhead, leader line, landing (horizontal segment), content (text/block).

    • MLEADERSTYLE: Customize all components.

      • Leader Format: Arrowhead type, color, linetype.

      • Leader Structure: Landing length, leader path (straight/curved).

      • Content: Text style, attachment (left/right), Content Type (mtext, block, none).

    • Use: Callouts, annotations, notes with consistent formatting.

B. DRAWING ORGANIZATION & REUSABILITY

Blocks & Attributes

  • Block (BLOCK): Single named object combining multiple entities.

    • Create: BLOCK command → select objects → define base point → name.

    • Insert: INSERT command → choose block → specify insertion point/scale/rotation.

    • Benefits: Reduces file size, ensures consistency, easy modification (REFEDIT).

  • Attributes (ATTDEF): Text information within a block definition.

    • Define: ATTDEF command → set Tag (identifier), Prompt (user query), Default value, Modes (Invisible, Constant, Verify, Preset).

    • Insert Block with Attributes: Prompts appear in order.

    • Edit Values:

      • EATTEDIT (Enhanced): Edit multiple attributes in a block reference.

      • ATTEDIT: Edit one attribute.

    • Extract Data: ATTOUT → creates .txt/.csv file of attribute data. ATTIN → imports data to update blocks.

    • Display/Hide: ATTREQ system variable (1=on, 0=off).

ATTDEF Mode Purpose
Invisible Attribute not displayed/plotted, but stored.
Constant Fixed value, no prompt on insert.
Verify Prompts twice for value confirmation.
Preset Uses default, no prompt.

[!TIP] Exam Practical: You will likely be asked to create a block (e.g., a door symbol) with attributes (e.g., "DOOR_NO", "SIZE"), insert it, and then extract the attribute data to a table.

External References (XREFs)

  • Purpose: Attach external DWG files as non-embedded references. Ideal for:

    • Site plans (referencing separate files for buildings, roads).

    • Standard details library.

    • Collaborative projects (different disciplines).

  • Commands & Palette: XREF command opens External References Palette.

  • Attachment Types:

    • Attach: XREF is loaded and plotted.

    • Overlay: XREF is loaded but not nested in XREFs attached to the current drawing (prevents circular references).

  • Path Types (Critical):

    • Full Path: Absolute path (C:...). Fragile if file moves.

    • Relative Path: Path relative to current drawing's location. Robust for project folders.

    • No Path: AutoCAD searches in Support File Search Path.

  • Management: Reload (update changes), Unload (temporarily remove), Detach (permanently remove), Bind (convert XREF to block in current drawing).

[!TIP] Major Pitfall: Using Full Path for XREFs. Always use Relative Path for project portability. Understand the difference between Attach and Overlay.

Layer Management & Properties

  • Layer States Manager (LA): Save/restore layer on/off, freeze, color, linetype, etc. (LAYER → States).

  • Layer Filters: Create filters (e.g., by name, color) to manage hundreds of layers in Layer Properties Manager.

  • Layer Tools (Express Tools):

    • LAYISO: Isolate selected object's layer (turn others off).

    • LAYUNISO: Undo LAYISO.

    • LAYFRZ: Freeze selected object's layer.

    • LAYTHW: Thaw all layers.

    • LAYCUR: Set current layer to selected object's layer.

  • Layer Properties Manager (LA):

    • Lineweight: Assign plot line thickness (0.00mm = default).

    • Transparency: Set layer transparency (0-90%).

    • Plot Style: Override CTB/STB for layer (if using named plot styles).

C. PRESENTATION & OUTPUT (PAPER SPACE)

Layouts & Viewports

  • Model Space vs. Paper Space:

    • Model Space (1 tab): Infinite drawing area at 1:1 scale.

    • Paper Space (Layout tabs): Represents printed page. Contains Viewports (windows into Model Space).

  • Layout Tab: Create/rename via LAYOUT command or right-click tab.

  • Viewports in Paper Space:

    • Create: MVIEW command → specify rectangle.

    • Set Scale: Double-click inside viewport → ZOOM → Scale (e.g., 1:50, 1/4"=1'-0"). Lock viewport (MVIEW → Lock) to prevent accidental zoom/pan.

    • Layer Overrides: In Paper Space, you can change layer properties (color, linetype, lineweight) for a specific viewport only (right-click layer → VP Override). Crucial for plotting different views with different layer settings.

[!TIP] Critical Concept: Always set the viewport scale in Paper Space. The geometry in Model Space is drawn at full size (1:1). The viewport scale determines how it prints.

Plotting & Publishing

  • PLOT Command (Ctrl+P):

    • Plot Area: Layout (entire tab), Window (select area in Model Space), Display.

    • Plot Scale: Scale (e.g., 1:1 for Layout, custom for Model Space window). Fit to Paper option.

    • Plot Offset: Center on page or specify X/Y.

    • Plot Style Table (CTB/STB): See below.

    • Plot to: Printer/Plotter, PDF, DWF, etc.

  • Plot Styles (CTB vs. STB):

    • Color-Dependent (CTB): Legacy. 255 colors → 255 plot styles. Assign by object color.

    • Named (STB): Modern. Create custom named styles (e.g., "Thick Black", "Thin Gray"). Assign by layer or object.

    • Conversion: CONVERTPSTYLES command to switch.

  • Publish (PUBLISH): Batch plot multiple drawings/layouts to a single PDF/DWF or multiple plots. Use Publish dialog to set sheet order, scales, and plot settings.

Hatching & Gradients

  • HATCH (HATCH): Fill area with pattern.

    • Pattern Types: ANSI, ISO, Predefined, Custom.

    • Associative: Default. Hatch updates if boundary changes. Non-Associative: Hatch is static.

    • Hatch Editor: Double-click existing hatch to modify pattern, scale, angle, associativity.

    • Hatch Origin: Set base point for pattern alignment.

    • Separate Hatches: HATCHEDIT → Separate to break complex hatch into individual hatches.

  • GRADIENT: Fill with smooth color transitions (2-color or 1-color with shading).

    • Types: Linear, cylindrical, conical, spherical.

    • Centered: Symmetrical gradient from center.

[!TIP] Performance Tip: Complex or dense hatching can slow down drawing. Use non-associative hatching for static areas, and PURGE to remove unused hatch patterns.

D. ADVANCED 2D/3D TOOLS & UTILITIES

Geometric & Parametric Constraints

  • Geometric Constraints: Define relationships between geometry.

    • Types: Coincident, Collinear, Concentric, Parallel, Perpendicular, Tangent, Smooth, Symmetric, Equal, Fix.

    • Apply: GEOMCONSTRAINT command or Parametric tab → select constraint type → select objects.

    • Effect: Enforces design intent; moving constrained objects maintains relationships.

  • Dimensional Constraints (Parametric): Drive geometry size/position with variables.

    • Types: Linear, Aligned, Angular, Radial, Diameter.

    • Apply: DIMCONSTRAINT command.

    • Parameters Manager: PARAMETERS command. Shows all constraints/dimensional variables. Can edit values, rename parameters, add expressions (e.g., d1 = d2 * 2).

    • Result: Creates parametric model – change a dimension, geometry updates.

Groups & Selection Tools

  • Groups (GROUP): Named collection of objects that behave as one.

    • GROUP command → Create → name → select objects.

    • Edit: GROUP → Edit → add/remove objects, reorder.

    • Difference from BLOCK: Group is not a single object; can be exploded easily. Block is a single definition.

  • Advanced Selection:

    • Quick Select (QSELECT): Filter objects by properties (layer, color, type, etc.) in a dialog.

    • Object Selection Filters (FILTER): Create complex filter lists (e.g., Layer = "Walls" AND Color = 1). Save/load filter lists.

    • Selection Cycling (SELECTIONCYCLING): When objects overlap, press Ctrl to cycle through selection choices.

DesignCenter & Tool Palettes

  • DesignCenter (ADCENTER): Browse files, blocks, layers, styles from current or other drawings.

    • Use: Drag-and-drop blocks/layers/styles into current drawing.

    • Open Drawing Tab: View contents of any DWG.

  • Tool Palettes (TOOLPALETTES): Customizable dockable palettes with tool buttons.

    • Create: Drag objects/blocks/styles from DesignCenter or drawing into a palette.

    • Manage: Right-click palette → Customize Palettes. Organize by project/discipline.

    • Benefit: One-click access to frequently used content.

Basic 3D Solid Modeling

  • Primitive Solids: BOX, CYLINDER, CONE, SPHERE, WEDGE, TORUS.

  • Extrude (EXTRUDE): Convert 2D closed profile (PLINE, CIRCLE) into 3D solid by giving height.

  • Revolve (REVOLVE): Convert 2D profile around an axis (line or polyline) to create 3D solid (e.g., vase, pulley).

  • Boolean Operations (3D):

    • UNION: Combine two or more solids into one.

    • SUBTRACT: Remove volume of one solid from another.

    • INTERSECT: Create solid from intersecting volume of two solids.

  • 3D Navigation:

    • 3DORBIT: Interactive 3D view (continuous orbit).

    • 3DVIEW: Save/restore named 3D views (isometric, top, side, etc.).

E. WORKFLOW OPTIMIZATION & FILE MANAGEMENT

Templates (DWT files)

  • Purpose: Starting point for new drawings with preset settings.

  • Contents: Units (UNITS), Limits (LIMITS), Layers, Dimension Styles, Text Styles, Plot Settings, Layouts.

  • Create: Set up drawing → SAVEAS → select DWT file type.

  • Use: NEW command → select template. Set default template location via OPTIONS → Files tab.

Keyboard Shortcuts & Aliases

  • Importance: Drastically increases drafting speed.

  • Customization:

    • CUI (Customize User Interface): Full interface editor. Create new commands, modify ribbon/toolbars, assign shortcuts.

    • ACAD.PGP: Text file (in Support folder) for command aliases (e.g., c for CIRCLE, l for LINE). Edit with Notepad.

File Formats & Compatibility

  • Native: DWG (drawing), DWT (template).

  • Version Compatibility: Newer AutoCAD can open older DWG, but not vice-versa. Use SAVEAS to save to older version (e.g., "AutoCAD 2018 Drawing").

  • Exchange Formats:

    • DXF: ASCII text format for data exchange with other CAD.

    • DWF/PDF: For lightweight viewing/plotting/electronic delivery.

    • BMP/JPG: Raster image export (EXPORT).

  • SAVE vs. SAVEAS:

    • SAVE: Overwrites current file.

    • SAVEAS: Creates a new file with new name/format/version. Original remains unchanged.

Drawing Utilities & System Variables

  • Key Setup Variables:

    • UNITS: Drawing units (Architectural, Decimal, Engineering, etc.) and angle.

    • LIMITS: Define drawing boundary (often set to paper size in mm/in).

    • SNAP/GRID: Visual/invisible cursor spacing.

    • ORTHOMODE: Restricts cursor to horizontal/vertical.

    • OSNAP (Object Snap): Precise point acquisition (Endpoint, Midpoint, Center, Intersection, etc.).

    • OTRACK (Object Snap Tracking): Track along alignment paths from OSNAP points.

  • Maintenance Commands:

    • PURGE: Remove unused definitions (blocks, layers, linetypes, styles). Essential before sending/plotting to reduce file size.

    • AUDIT: Check and fix drawing errors.

    • RECOVER: Open and fix a damaged drawing file.

[!TIP] Best Practice: Always PURGE (with -PURGE for all items) before SAVEAS to an older version or before plotting/emailing. Run AUDIT periodically on large/team drawings.
